Sometimes all you need at the centre of an emotional ad is a hilarious image. Once you’ve had the idea of dressing wiener dogs up as wieners and having them run towards giant ketchup bottles, all the rest is execution – and mostly that means getting out of the idea’s way and letting it shine with great use of slow-motion and close-up shots. The result is an ad that’s perfect for the unique atmosphere of Super Bowl game day – it makes as much emotional sense caught across a crowded party as paid close attention on YouTube, and has a big “what the hell did I just see?” factor without being alienating.
