Some ads don’t really need tampering with, of course. John Lewis’ ad needs no introduction – unless you’re reading this outside Britain, when all you need know is that they’re the kings of Christmas advertising and their spot has become part of the cultural calendar every year. This year they told the story of a boy and his penguin – and as usual, John Lewis’ stores were full of penguinny merchandise to capitalise on it. But this year in particular they outdid themselves – Monty is the most emotional ad John Lewis have ever produced, a 5-Star blockbuster that more than does its job of making John Lewis famous and more profitable for years to come.
